The Great petition

Believe it or not, women have not always been able to vote in Victoria. Hard to believe I know but this injustice, (call it what you like) was eventually rectified after the Great Petition. A petition of 30,000 signatures.

However, despite the number of signatories on the Great petition, it still took 17 years to give women the vote.

Everyone loves Fungi

Visiting a property at Flinders today I found some great Fungi. The above ground parts are where spores are released to grow away from the parent fungi. The major part of the fungi is out of sight in the ground or rotting timber, slowly breaking it down.

Fantastic aren’t they.

Lyrebird survey

The twenty-fifth Lyrebird survey has been carried out at Kinglake National Park. Whilst generally there are no numbers generated from the survey, it has proven a successful method of assessing Lyrebird populations in pockets of the National Park and a base line of density in these pockets. It’s also fun. How so?

  • Get up at 5:30 AM on a cold July morning at Kinglake,
  • Drive to your survey point in the dark.
  • Stand in the dark and wait for the sun to rise.
  • Listen for the male Lyrebird to call and record his location using a compass and estimated distance from where you stand.
  • Go back to the office for breakfast and then home.

How is that not fun?

Below is the scene at first light from my survey site. Those burnt Eucalypts that are still alive have new leaf growth. Below these there are literally hundreds of thousands of new trees growing.

A close encounter with an Australian Raven

Visiting Canberra recently and waiting for Judy whilst she was shopping, I happened to see an Australian Raven close by.

I’ve always had trouble telling the difference between Australian Raven and Little Raven but this encounter did help. Sorry the video is a bit dark and fuzzy. I left my $ 20,000 video camera at home, (don’t you hate that).

Have and look and see what you think.
